About Fahd Al Kandari

Sheikh Fahd Al Kandari (Fahd ibn Salim ibn Ali al-Kandari), born in Kuwait on 28 June 1982, is one of the country's most popular Quran reciters. An imam at the Grand Mosque of Kuwait, where huge congregations pray behind him during the nights of Ramadan, he is also known across the Arab world for his television programmes, above all Bil-Qur'an Ihtadaytu (Guided by the Quran), about converts to Islam.

Memorising the Quran

As a pupil at Al-Qurain intermediate school, he was urged to memorise the Quran by his Islamic studies teacher, Suleiman al-Sharida, who also won over his father. Placed with Sheikh Rashad Muhammad Allam, imam of a mosque in Fahaheel, he memorised the entire Quran in one year and seven months, finishing at around fifteen. He was already leading prayers at fourteen, in the mosque next to the family home.

Imamate

Appointed an imam in 1999, he served in neighbourhood mosques, notably in Al-Yarmouk and Qurtuba. He also joined the group of reciters who take turns leading the night prayers (qiyam) of the last ten nights of Ramadan at the Grand Mosque, the country's largest, where he became one of the most followed imams. He is regularly invited abroad: in 2008 he was invited to lead Tarawih in Dubai, Bahrain and Colorado, and in 2012 (1433 AH) he led the night prayers at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha. He won first prize in the international Quran recitation competition held in Kuwait.

Television and preaching

His first programme, La'ali' (Pearls), broadcast on Al-Rai TV during Ramadan 2009, was aimed at children aged ten to fourteen. In Musafir ma'a al-Qur'an (Traveller with the Quran), filmed in a dozen countries including Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania and Chechnya, he met more than thirty memorisers of the Quran to share their methods. Then came the seasons of Bil-Qur'an Ihtadaytu, in which converts from Europe and Japan tell their stories, the first of which had passed nine million views on YouTube by 2015; Fasiru (2017), on the wonders of creation; and Qudwa (2023), on the life of the Prophet ﷺ, filmed in Mecca and Medina.

Recordings

He has released recordings of individual surahs, including al-Baqara and Juz' Tabarak, began recording a complete recitation in Cairo in 2008, and made a teaching recitation (al-mushaf al-mu'allim), all in the Hafs 'an 'Asim transmission. Among the reciters he counts as close friends are Mishary Rashid Alafasy, whom he consults about his recordings, and Salah Al Hashem.
