About Maher Al Mueaqly

Sheikh Maher Al Mueaqly (Maher ibn Hamad ibn Mu'ayqil al-Mu'ayqili al-Balawi), born on 7 January 1969 in Medina, is a Saudi imam and Quran reciter. An imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca since 2007, he holds a doctorate in Islamic jurisprudence, teaches at Umm al-Qura University and is one of the most listened-to Quran reciters in the world. In 2024 he delivered the Day of Arafat sermon during the Hajj.

From mathematics to fiqh

Born in Medina to a family of the Bali tribe, hence the name al-Balawi, he was educated there and graduated in mathematics from the city's Teachers' College in 1412 AH (1992). He then moved to Mecca, where he taught mathematics and later worked as a student counsellor at Prince Abd al-Majid School.

He went on to study the Islamic sciences at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca, earning a master's degree in Hanbali jurisprudence (fiqh) in 1425 AH (2004) and a doctorate in fiqh in 1434 AH (2012). He has since taught at the university's College of Judicial Studies and Regulations, where he served as vice-dean for graduate studies and scientific research.

Imam of the Two Holy Mosques

He first led the prayers at al-Sa'di Mosque in the Al-Awali district of Mecca. During Ramadan 1426 and 1427 AH (2005 and 2006) he was called upon to lead the Tarawih prayers at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. In 1428 AH (August 2007) he was appointed an official imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, where he has since led the daily prayers and, in Ramadan, the Tarawih.

On 9 Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 (15 June 2024), with royal approval, he delivered the Day of Arafat sermon at Namirah Mosque to pilgrims gathered for the high point of the Hajj.

Recitation

He recites according to the Hafs transmission. His complete murattal recitation of the Quran and the recordings of his Tarawih prayers at the Grand Mosque, notably those of 1432 and 1433 AH, have reached a worldwide audience through radio, television and the internet. His restrained, clear and melodious delivery has become one of the most recognisable in the Muslim world. He has also recorded a teaching edition of the Quran (al-Mushaf al-Mu'allim) designed for learners.
