Surah Al-Haaqqa – Maher Al Mueaqly

Al-Haaqqa ("The Reality") is the 69th surah of the Quran, in the 29th juz. It is a Meccan surah of 52 verses, 78th in the traditional order of revelation, after Al-Mulk. Its name is one of the names of the Day of Judgment, the reality that must come to pass: the surah recalls the peoples who denied it, describes that Day, and affirms that the Quran is the word of God.

It opens with a threefold question: the Reality; what is the Reality; and what will make you know what the Reality is? (69:1-3). It then recalls the peoples who denied the Hour: Thamud, destroyed by an overwhelming blast; 'Ad, by a furious wind that raged for seven nights and eight days; Pharaoh and the overturned cities; and the ship that carried the survivors of the flood (69:4-12).

At the blast of the Trumpet the earth and the mountains are crushed, the sky is split, and eight bear the Throne of your Lord (69:13-17). That Day you will be exposed, and no secret of yours will remain hidden (69:18). The one given his record in his right hand exclaims: "Here, read my record!"; the one given it in his left hand wishes he had never received it, for he did not believe in God the Most Great nor urge the feeding of the poor (69:19-37).

The last part swears by what is seen and unseen that the Quran is the word of a noble messenger, not of a poet or a soothsayer (69:38-43), that had the Prophet ﷺ invented anything in God's name he would have been seized (69:44-47), and that it is the certain truth (69:51). It ends: so glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great (69:52).

A report that Umar ibn al-Khattab was first moved toward Islam on hearing the Prophet ﷺ recite this surah (Ahmad) has a broken chain and is considered weak. See also Al-Waqi'a and Al-Inshiqaq, which also describes how the records are received.
