About Yasser Al Dossari

Sheikh Yasser Al Dossari (Yasser ibn Rashid ibn Husayn al-Wadani al-Dosari), born on 6 August 1980 (24 Ramadan 1400 AH) in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia, has been an imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca since 2019 and one of its Friday preachers since 2022. A doctor of comparative jurisprudence, he first made his name in Riyadh, where the Tarawih prayers he led at Al-Dakhil Mosque drew huge crowds.

Early life and education

He grew up in Riyadh, where his family moved while he was still in primary school. He started learning the Quran at six, encouraged by his father, continued in the state Quran-memorisation schools and had memorised the whole Book by the age of fifteen, in 1995. He then recited it in full to several masters, among them Sheikhs Bakri al-Tarabishi, Muhammad Tamim al-Zu'bi, Ibrahim al-Akhdar, Mahmud Umar Sukkar, Ahmad Khalil Shahin and Sa'd Sunbul.

After a year at King Abdulaziz Military Academy, he switched to the College of Sharia at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, graduating in 1424 AH. At the same university's Higher Judicial Institute he went on to earn a master's degree (1430 AH) and a doctorate in comparative fiqh (1435 AH), both with the highest honours. His teachers in the religious sciences include Sheikhs Abdulaziz Al al-Sheikh, Salih al-Fawzan and Abdullah ibn Jibrin.

Imam and academic in Riyadh

He led his first mosque in 1995 (1416 AH), while still at high school, in Riyadh's al-Faruq district. He then served at Al-Kawthar Mosque, where his first cassette, Surah Yusuf, was recorded, and at the Imam Abdullah ibn Saud and Sheikh Ibn Baz mosques. In 2005 (1426 AH) he became imam of Al-Dakhil Mosque in the Gharnata district, a post he held for some fifteen years and which made him famous.

Alongside his mosque duties he taught fiqh at King Saud University, later becoming an associate professor at the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies of Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca. He has written around thirty books and studies on the Quranic sciences and comparative fiqh.

At the Grand Mosque in Mecca

In June 2015 (Sha'ban 1436 AH) a royal order assigned him to lead the Tarawih and Tahajjud prayers at the Grand Mosque during Ramadan, a role he filled for five consecutive years. In October 2019 (Safar 1441 AH) he was appointed a permanent imam of the mosque. In August 2020 he joined the advisory board of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, and in December 2022 he was approved to deliver the Friday sermon there. His appointment as imam was renewed in March 2024 (Sha'ban 1445 AH).

Recitation

His recitation, in the reading of Hafs, is among the most listened to of his generation; his Tarawih prayers, first in Riyadh and then in Mecca, spread widely on social media and did much for his popularity. The magazine of the Saudi charity Insan has listed him among the most influential figures in Saudi society.
