Surah At-Takathur – Fahd Al Kandari

At-Takathur ("Competition", literally "rivalry in increase") is the 102nd surah of the Quran, in Juz' Amma. Meccan, it has 8 verses and is the 16th surah in the traditional order of revelation, after Al-Kauther. Its name comes from its first verse: "Competition in increase diverts you" (102:1).

The surah reproaches people for being absorbed in rivalry over wealth, children and status "until you visit the graves" (102:2), that is, until death. Twice it warns: "No! You are going to know" (102:3-4). Had they known with the knowledge of certainty, they would see Hellfire; they will see it with the eye of certainty, and will then be asked about the pleasures they enjoyed (102:5-8).

Abdullah ibn ash-Shikhkhir heard the Prophet ﷺ, while reciting this surah, say: "The son of Adam says: My wealth, my wealth! But do you have of your wealth anything except what you ate and consumed, wore and wore out, or gave in charity and sent ahead?" (Muslim). Having eaten at the house of one of the Ansar, he told Abu Bakr and Umar they would be asked about that blessing on the Day of Resurrection (Muslim).
