Early years

His attachment to the Quran grew at the side of his grandfather, whom he used to accompany to the mosque. During the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait (1990–91), when he was about nine, he began calling the adhan at his local mosque, which most of its muezzins had left, and his family discovered his gift for recitation.

The Grand Mosque and studies

While still very young he led the Ramadan qiyam prayers at the Grand Mosque. He recalls that the Emir, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who had prayed behind him on the 27th night, later received him, urged him to hold fast to the Quran and asked for a recording of that night's prayer.

He earned a bachelor's degree at Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca, where he also received an ijaza with a chain of transmission (sanad) going back to the Prophet ﷺ, followed by a master's degree from Kuwait University; he also holds a doctorate, with a focus on Islamic economics. He has recorded a recitation of the Quran in the Hafs reading as well as Tarawih prayers.
