About Mustafa Ismail

Sheikh Mustafa Ismail (Mustafa Muhammad Mursi Ismail, 1905–1978) was one of the great Egyptian Quran reciters of the twentieth century. Palace reciter under King Farouk and later reciter of al-Azhar Mosque, he was famed for his command of the maqamat, the melodic modes he moved between with legendary ease. He left more than 1,300 recitations that are still broadcast on Quran radio stations.

Early life and training

Born on 17 June 1905 in Mit Ghazal, a village in the Santa district of Gharbia governorate, he memorised the Quran as a child at the village kuttab. He then refined his recitation under Sheikh Idris Fakhir, going over the whole Quran with him some thirty times, and studied the Quranic readings and the rules of recitation at the Ahmadi Institute in Tanta.

From Tanta to the royal palace

His reputation was made in Tanta, at the mourning ceremony for Hussein Bey al-Qasabi, a leading local notable: before an audience of dignitaries from across the country, and with no microphone, the young reciter held the whole gathering spellbound. His fame spread throughout the Delta. In Cairo he stood in at short notice for Sheikh Abd al-Fattah al-Sha'sha'i at a religious celebration; King Farouk heard him on the radio and made him reciter of the royal palace. He was also the first reciter taken on by Egyptian radio without sitting the usual audition. By the 1940s his Ramadan recitations from the palace were heard across the Arab world, and he became the reciter of al-Azhar Mosque.

A style built on the maqamat

He moved fluidly between nineteen maqamat and their branches without ever going off pitch, and was known for his unexpected cadences; musicians and fellow reciters such as Sheikh Ahmed Nuinaa have stressed how inventive his art was. He is often named alongside Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, Abdul Basit Abd al-Samad and Mahmoud Khalil al-Hussary as one of the defining voices of the Egyptian school. Besides his many mujawwad recitations, he recorded the complete Quran in murattal style, in the Hafs transmission.

Travels and honours

He recited in twenty-five Arab and Muslim countries, as well as in Ceylon, Malaysia, Tanzania, Germany and the United States; in 1969 he spent the whole of Ramadan in Turkey, reciting at Istanbul's Süleymaniye Mosque among other places. He recited at al-Aqsa Mosque in 1960 and again in 1977, as part of the official delegation accompanying President Sadat to Jerusalem. He was decorated by Gamal Abdel Nasser and received honours from Lebanon (the Order of the Cedar, 1958), Syria, Malaysia and Tanzania; Egypt awarded him the Order of Distinction posthumously in 1985.

Death

On 22 December 1978 he gave his last recitation in Damietta, at the opening of al-Bahr Mosque in the presence of President Sadat. Back at his villa in Alexandria, he suffered a brain haemorrhage and died in hospital on 26 December 1978. After a state funeral he was buried, as he had wished, at his home in Mit Ghazal.
