About Mustafa Al Lahouni

Sheikh Mustafa Al Lahouni (Mustafa al-Lahuni) is an Egyptian Quran reciter and holder of a doctorate who has devoted more than forty years to the study of tajweed. His Ramadan Tarawih recitations in Cairo, broadcast on Egyptian television and radio, made him widely known, and many listeners see him as an heir to the great Egyptian school of recitation.

Egyptian television and radio broadcast his Tarawih recitations, notably from the al-Nour Mosque in the Abbasiya district and from the Mosque of 'Amr ibn al-'As, the oldest in Egypt. At 'Amr ibn al-'As, thousands of worshippers came to pray behind him during the last ten nights of Ramadan, until the crowds overflowed into the surrounding streets. He has also recited during Egyptian Radio's live broadcasts of the dawn prayer from Al-Azhar Mosque.

Style and teaching

The daily Al-Ahram describes him as a living representative of the Egyptian school, combining strict observance of the rules of tajweed and the articulation points of the letters with a command of the maqamat, the melodic modes, and compares his voice to the great reciters of the mid-twentieth century such as Muhammad Rifat, Mustafa Ismail and Abdul Basit Abdul Samad. He set up an online channel dedicated to the art of recitation and tajweed, followed by a page called al-Hanajir al-Dhahabiyya ("Golden Throats") to discover and train talented young reciters. His complete murattal recitation of the Quran follows the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.
