About Mahmoud Ali Al banna

Sheikh Mahmoud Ali Al banna (Mahmud Ali al-Banna), born on 17 December 1926 in Shubra Bas, Menoufia Governorate, and died on 20 July 1985, was one of the great Egyptian Quran reciters of the golden age of radio. Official reciter at major mosques in Cairo and Tanta, he recorded a complete recitation of the Quran in 1967 and was one of the founders of the reciters' syndicate.

Education

He learned the Quran at his village kuttab under Sheikh Musa al-Mantash and completed its memorisation at the age of eleven. He then went to Tanta to study the religious sciences at the Ahmadi Mosque, where he received the Quranic readings from Imam Ibrahim ibn Salam al-Maliki.

Arriving in Cairo in 1945, he quickly made a name for himself and studied the melodic modes (maqamat) with Sheikh Darwish al-Hariri, a leading authority in the field. In 1947 the Young Men's Muslim Association chose him as its reciter, and he opened all the ceremonies it held.

Radio and the great mosques

In 1948, at one of these ceremonies, the statesman Ali Maher Pasha, Emir Abd el-Krim al-Khattabi and other notables heard him and urged him to join Egyptian Radio. He was accepted that same year, and his first live broadcast, from Surah Hud, went on air in December 1948. Within a few years he was among the most famous reciters in Egypt.

He was reciter of the Ayn al-Hayat Mosque in the late 1940s and of the al-Rifa'i Mosque in the 1950s, then moved in 1959 to the Ahmadi Mosque in Tanta, where he remained until 1980. He then became reciter of the al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo until his death.

Recordings and travels

He left the radio a vast archive of recordings, including a complete mujawwad (melodic) recitation and a murattal recitation recorded in 1967, both in the reading of Hafs, as well as complete recitations recorded for the radio stations of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

For nearly forty years he recited abroad, especially during Ramadan: in the Two Holy Mosques, al-Aqsa Mosque, the Umayyad Mosque, most Arab countries and several European countries, including Germany in 1978. Al-Azhar sent him to international Islamic conferences, and the Ministry of Awqaf sent him to judge recitation competitions.

Working alongside Sheikh Abul Ainain Shu'aisha to create the syndicate of Quran reciters, he was elected its deputy head when it was founded in 1984.

Death and honours

He died on 20 July 1985 (3 Dhu al-Qa'da 1405 AH) and was buried in the mausoleum attached to his mosque in his home village of Shubra Bas. In his lifetime he had received a gift from President Nasser in 1967 and the Radio Shield at the broadcaster's golden jubilee in 1984. In 1990 he was posthumously awarded the Order of Sciences and Arts, and a main street in Tanta, near the Ahmadi Mosque, bears his name.
