About Abdelfatah Al Chaachai
Sheikh Abdelfatah Al Chaachai (Abd al-Fattah Mahmud al-Sha'sha'i, 1890-1962) was one of the great Egyptian Quran reciters of the early twentieth century. One of the first generation of reciters on Egyptian radio, he served as reciter of the Sayyida Zaynab Mosque in Cairo and, in 1948, became the first to recite the Quran over loudspeakers in Mecca and Medina.

He was born on 21 March 1890 in the village of Sha'sha', in the Ashmun district of Menoufia Governorate, and memorised the Quran with his father, Sheikh Mahmud Ibrahim al-Sha'sha'i, completing it at about the age of ten. He then studied tajweed in Tanta at the Ahmadi Mosque and later enrolled at al-Azhar in Cairo, where he learned the Quranic readings from Sheikh Muhammad Bayyumi and Sheikh Ali Subay'.
He first led a troupe of religious chanters (tawashih), which included Zakariyya Ahmad, before devoting himself entirely to Quran recitation from 1930. He was among the first reciters on Egyptian state radio, launched in 1934. Appointed reciter of the Sayyida Nafisa Mosque and then, around 1940, of the Sayyida Zaynab Mosque, he held that post until his death. He also recited during the Hajj and travelled to Iraq several times in the 1950s.
His voice, powerful despite a frail build, and his strict tajweed earned him the nickname "Abu al-Qurra'" (father of the reciters). He died on 11 November 1962 in Shubra, Cairo. In 1990 Egypt posthumously awarded him the Order of Sciences and Arts, first class. His son Ibrahim Abdelfatah Al Chaachai (1930-1992) succeeded him as reciter of the Sayyida Zaynab Mosque. His recitations are in the melodic mujawwad style, in the Hafs 'an 'Asim reading.
