About Ahmed Aissa El Masarawi

Sheikh Ahmed Aissa El Masarawi (Ahmad 'Issa Hassan al-Ma'sarawi), born on 1 March 1953 in Dakahlia Governorate, is an Egyptian authority on the Quranic readings and a professor of hadith at Al-Azhar University. He is a former Sheikh of the Reciters of Egypt (Shaykh 'Umum al-Maqari' al-Misriyya) and has recorded recitations in all ten readings and their twenty transmissions.

Education and teachers

Born in the village of Dandit in the Mit Ghamr district, he completed his memorisation of the Quran in 1964 with Sheikh Abd al-Hamid Hajjaj, then read the transmissions of Hafs and Warsh with Sheikh Muhammad Isma'il 'Abduh. He studied at the al-Khazindar Institute of Readings in Shubra, Cairo, and received his ijaza in the ten readings from Sheikh Abd al-Hakim Abd al-Latif and Sheikh Muhammad Abd al-Hamid Abdullah. At Al-Azhar's Faculty of Islamic Studies he earned his first degree in 1980, a master's in hadith sciences in 1989 and a doctorate with first-class honours in 1992.

Career

He taught in Al-Azhar institutes from 1976 to 1993, with a spell at a teachers' college in Saudi Arabia from 1981 to 1985, and rose to the rank of professor of hadith at Al-Azhar University. He chaired the committee of the Islamic Research Academy that reviews printed copies of the Quran, headed the reading school of the al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo and sat on the panel that examines reciters for Egyptian radio. Appointed Sheikh of the Reciters of Egypt, he was removed from the post on 3 April 2014. He has written works on hadith and edited texts on the readings.

Recordings

His recordings cover all ten canonical readings, from Qalun and Warsh from Nafi' to Ishaq and Idris from Khalaf, by way of Hafs 'an 'Asim.
