The Quran in the Rawh ‘an Ya‘qub riwaya

Rawh ‘an Ya‘qub is one of the two transmissions of the reading of Ya‘qub al-Hadrami, the leading reader of Basra and one of the ten canonical readers. Its transmitter, Abu al-Hasan Rawh ibn ‘Abd al-Mu’min al-Hudhali, a Basran reader and grammarian who died in 234 or 235 AH (around 849), was one of Ya‘qub's most eminent and reliable disciples. Today it is mainly preserved in the teaching of the ten readings.

Ya‘qub ibn Ishaq al-Hadrami (735–821; 117–205 AH) became the master of recitation in Basra after Abu ‘Amr. A student of Sallam al-Tawil, himself a student of ‘Asim and Abu ‘Amr, he was according to Abu Hatim al-Sijistani the most knowledgeable authority on the variant readings and their grounds. Rawh read directly with him and also collected variants from students of Abu ‘Amr; a trusted narrator, he is cited by al-Bukhari in his Sahih.

Rawh shares Ya‘qub's features: ‘alayhum and fīhunna with a "u", a short separated madd, an h added to certain words when pausing (huwah, ‘ammah), and Māliki yawmi d-dīn with a long alif. He differs from Ruways notably by fully pronouncing two consecutive hamzas within a word, like Hafs, and by saying aṣ-ṣirāṭ with the emphatic ṣ; he also reads a-āmantum with an interrogative hamza where Ruways follows Hafs.
