About Abdelbasset Abdessamad

Sheikh Abdelbasset Abdessamad (Abd al-Basit Muhammad Abd al-Samad, 1927–1988) was an Egyptian Quran reciter from Upper Egypt, widely regarded as one of the greatest voices in the history of Quranic recitation. Nicknamed "the Golden Throat" and "the Voice of Mecca", he carried the Quran to audiences across the world for nearly four decades and was the first president of Egypt's Quran Reciters' Syndicate.

Childhood in Upper Egypt

He was born in 1927 in the village of Al-Mara'iza near Armant, then in Qena Governorate (now part of Luxor), into a family steeped in recitation: his grandfather and father were known for their mastery of the Quran, and his two elder brothers, Mahmoud and Abd al-Hamid, were already attending the village Quran school.

He joined them there under Sheikh Muhammad al-Amir and had memorised the whole Quran by about the age of ten. He then studied the canonical readings (qira'at) with Sheikh Muhammad Salim Hamada. While still a boy he was in demand across the region to recite at religious gatherings.

From Cairo to the world

In the early 1950s, having come to Cairo for the celebrations at the Sayyida Zaynab Mosque, he was invited to recite before the crowd; a reading planned to last a few minutes went on at length and made his name overnight. In 1951 he joined Egyptian radio, which began broadcasting his recitations regularly. In 1952 he became the official reciter of the Imam al-Shafi'i Mosque, and in 1958 of the al-Husayn Mosque, both in Cairo.

His fame quickly spread abroad. As early as 1951, during the Hajj, he recited in the Two Holy Mosques and recorded for Saudi radio. He went on to tour the Arab world, Asia (Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia), Africa (including South Africa in 1966), Europe and the United States, drawing huge crowds wherever he went.

Recordings and honours

He left complete recordings of the Quran in the Hafs transmission in two styles, the measured murattal and the melodic mujawwad, as well as a complete recitation in the Warsh transmission, recorded at the request of King Hassan II of Morocco. He championed the creation of a syndicate for Quran reciters in Egypt and was elected its first president in 1984.

Many countries decorated him, among them Syria (Order of Merit), Lebanon (Order of the Cedar), Malaysia and Senegal.

Death and legacy

Suffering from diabetes and later hepatitis, he died in Cairo on 30 November 1988, aged 61; funeral prayers in absentia were held in mosques around the world. Together with Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary, Mohamed Siddiq Al-Minshawi and Mustafa Ismail, he embodies the golden age of the Egyptian school of recitation, and his style, imitated by generations of reciters, is sometimes described as a school of its own.
