About Yahya Hawwa

Yahya Hawwa (Yahya ibn Mahmoud Hawwa), born on 15 March 1976, is a Syrian Quran reciter and nasheed singer. Raised in Mecca, where he memorised the Quran and received an ijaza, he has led Tarawih prayers since 1992 in mosques in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and beyond. Known across the Arab world for songs such as Hayati Kulluha Lillah, he is nicknamed "the Optimist" and "the artist of the Syrian revolution".

Education

After his father, Mahmoud Hawwa, was killed in Hama in the early 1980s, when Yahya was five, he grew up in Mecca and went through school there. He completed the memorisation of the Quran under Sheikh Farij al-Harbi and studied tajweed with several teachers, including Sheikh Muhammad Nabhan al-Masri, before receiving an ijaza with an unbroken chain of transmission from Sheikh Khalid al-Turk. He moved to Jordan for university, earning a BA in Islamic law from Zarqa Private University in 2003 and a master's in psychological and educational counselling from Amman Arab University in 2008.

Recitation and imamate

He has led Tarawih since 1992 in mosques in Mecca and Jeddah, then in Jordan, where he was imam of the al-Kalouti Mosque in Amman during his studies, as well as in Lebanon, Britain, Canada, the United States and Australia. He has recorded a complete recitation of the Quran, followed by the supplication for completing it, in the Hafs 'an 'Asim transmission, along with many separately released surahs (Yusuf, Maryam and Ta-Ha, al-Isra' and al-Kahf, Juz' 'Amma and others), morning and evening remembrances, and ruqya.

Singing and activism

Encouraged by the Syrian poet Salim Abd al-Qadir Zanjir, he released his first album, Ji'nak, and had his breakthrough in 2006 with Hayati Kulluha Lillah (My Whole Life Is for God), which was translated into several languages. His video Ya Dha al-Jalal won an award at the 2009 Cairo International Festival, and he has presented the TV programme Ma'a Yahya. An opponent of Bashar al-Assad's government, he dedicated many songs to the Syrian uprising of 2011, earning the title "artist of the Syrian revolution". He has served as a goodwill ambassador for the British charity Human Appeal.
