About Mohy El-Din Al Kourdi

Sheikh Mohy El-Din Al Kourdi (Abu al-Hasan Muhyi al-Din ibn Hasan al-Kurdi, 1912-2009), born in Damascus in 1330 AH and died there in 1430 AH, was one of the great masters of Quranic recitation in twentieth-century Syria. Imam and preacher of a Damascus mosque for decades, he passed on the ten readings to many students, several of whom became renowned teachers in their own right.

Education

Born in the al-Haywatiyya quarter, he worked as a boy alongside his father, a butcher, while learning the Quran with Sheikh 'Izz al-Din al-'Irqsusi, completing its memorisation at around seventeen. He then read a complete recitation in the reading of Hafs by way of the Shatibiyya with Sheikh Mahmud Fa'iz al-Dayr'atani, and went on to combine the ten readings under him, receiving his ijaza in 1371 AH (1952) after five years of study. He also studied with Sheikh Badr al-Din al-Hasani, Sheikh Salih al-'Aqqad and Sheikh Abd al-Karim al-Rifa'i.

Imamate and teaching

Imam and preacher of the al-Dhahabiyya Mosque in Damascus, he also supervised the reading schools of the Zayd ibn Thabit association's mosques and led the Tarawih prayers in various readings. His students in the readings include Muhammad Na'im al-'Irqsusi, Muhammad Tamim al-Zu'bi, Muhammad Haytham Munini and Ayman Swed. He left a complete recitation of the Quran in the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.

Death

He died in Damascus on Friday 16 Sha'ban 1430 AH (7 August 2009), at almost a hundred lunar years of age, and was buried in the al-Bab al-Saghir cemetery.
