About Saber Abdul Hakam

Sheikh Saber Abdul Hakam (Saber Muhammad Abd al-Hakam Sulayman), born in 1962 in Beheira Governorate, is an Egyptian Quran reciter based in Riyadh. An agronomist by training who holds ijazas in several Quranic readings, he has taught recitation at the Charitable Society for Quran Memorisation in Riyadh and served as imam of a mosque in the city.

Background and education

He was born on 6 December 1962 in al-Bureijat, a village in the Kom Hamada district on the western bank of the Rosetta branch of the Nile. After learning the Quran from the sheikhs of his village, he earned a degree in agriculture from Alexandria University in 1986. He later studied at the Alexandria Institute of Quranic Readings, which awarded him a tajweed diploma in 1426 AH (2005) and its higher diploma in the ten readings in 1430 AH (2009).

He holds ijazas in the Hafs reading through both the Shatibiyya and the Tayyibat al-Nashr, in Warsh 'an Nafi', in the reading of 'Asim, and in the seven readings through the Shatibiyya, received mainly in Riyadh from Sheikhs Abbas al-Masri, Ihab Fikri and Adnan al-Ardi.

Career

After serving as imam and preacher in several Egyptian mosques from 1982 to 1989, he moved to Riyadh. From 1410 AH (1990) he taught the Quran at the city's Charitable Society for Quran Memorisation; he was also muezzin of the Salah al-Din mosque and, from 1417 AH (1996), imam of the Abdullah Bahamdan mosque in the al-Wurud district. He has taught in private schools, run courses at Riyadh's Institute for Training Quran Teachers, and sat on the nomination and judging committee of the Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz local Quran competition for the Riyadh region. Students from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Syria have received his ijaza.

His complete murattal recitation of the Quran follows the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.
