About Outlandish

Outlandish is a Danish hip-hop group formed in 1997 in Brøndby Strand, a suburb of Copenhagen, by Isam Bachiri, Waqas Ali Qadri and Lenny Martinez. Blending rap and R&B with Arabic, Pakistani and Latin sounds, the group broke through in Europe with "Aicha" (2003) and found a loyal Muslim audience with songs shaped by the faith of two of its members.

Three friends from Brøndby

The founders met as teenagers at a youth club in Brøndby Strand. Isam Bachiri, born in Copenhagen in 1977, is of Moroccan (Riffian) descent, and Waqas Ali Qadri, born in 1976, is of Pakistani descent; both are Muslims. Lenny Martinez, born in Honduras in 1974, moved to Denmark in 1991 and is a Catholic. The name, found in a dictionary in 1997, means "strange, foreign". The trio sang mainly in English, with Spanish, Urdu and Arabic lines woven into their songs.

European success

Their debut Outland's Official (2000) produced the Danish hit "Walou", and Bread & Barrels of Water (2002) went to number one in Denmark. Its cover of Khaled's "Aicha" topped the charts in Germany and Switzerland in 2003, while "Guantanamo" charted in Germany and the United Kingdom. In 2006 the group won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Danish Act.

Closer Than Veins

Released on 31 October 2005, Closer Than Veins is the group's most openly spiritual album; it reached number three in Denmark and went platinum there. Its tracks include "Look Into My Eyes", about Palestine, "Callin' U", "Sakeena", "Kom igen" with U$O, ADL and Salah Edin, "Reggada" with Taibi and Dany Raï, and "I've Seen", recorded with Sami Yusuf. Prayer, the Quran, racism, Palestine and coexistence between peoples are recurring themes in their lyrics.

Later years

Sound of a Rebel (2009) and Warrior // Worrier (2012) followed, while Isam Bachiri and Waqas Ali Qadri also released solo albums. The group split amicably in July 2017 after twenty years together. Waqas Ali Qadri and Lenny Martinez revived it as a duo in 2019 and released The Cornershop Carnival in 2023.
