About Ahmed Bukhatir

Ahmed Bukhatir (Ahmed Abdulrahman Bukhatir), born on 16 October 1975 in Sharjah, is an Emirati nasheed singer and one of the best-known voices of the genre in the Gulf. He sings without musical instruments, in Arabic, English and French, and albums such as Al-Quds Tunadina, Hasanat (2007) and Lahazat ma'a Allah (2010) have taken him to audiences well beyond the UAE, in Europe and North America.

Background and education

The fifth of ten children, he is the son of Sharjah businessman Abdulrahman Bukhatir and the brother of the Quran reciter Salah Bukhatir, an imam in Sharjah. He spent several years at an Islamic centre in Sharjah learning the rules of Quranic recitation (tajwid) and memorised the whole Quran in the Hafs 'an 'Asim reading. In 1999 he graduated in information systems management from Al Ain University of Science and Technology.

Nasheed career

He began singing nasheeds in the late 1980s and released his first album, Intisaf al-Layl ("Midnight"), at the end of the 1990s. It was followed by Al-Quds Tunadina ("Jerusalem Calls Us"), Fartaqi, Samtan ("Silence"), Da'ani ("Let Me", 2005), Hasanat ("Good Deeds", 2007) and Lahazat ma'a Allah ("Moments with Allah", 2010). Holding that Islamic law rules out musical instruments, he performs without instrumental accompaniment.

He has given concerts in the United Kingdom, notably at the Global Peace and Unity event in London in 2006 and on a British tour in 2018, and in Canada, in Toronto, in 2010.

Other activities

Alongside his music he has run the public relations agency Promax Middle East and chairs a group of companies. In November 2007 he was appointed a member of the Sharjah Consultative Council. He is also the author of a novel, Fata al-Tinnin ("The Dragon Boy"), which earned him the Montegrappa First Fiction prize at the 2016 Emirates Airline Festival of Literature in Dubai.
