About Nasser Al Qatami

Sheikh Nasser Al Qatami (Nasser ibn Ali al-Qatami), born in Riyadh in 1980 (1400 AH), is a Saudi Quran reciter and one of the most listened-to voices in the Gulf and the wider Arab world. An imam since the age of fourteen, he has led prayers in several major mosques in Riyadh, where his Tarawih prayers draw very large congregations, and he co-founded the Ayat group for Quranic media.

Education

He learned the Quran as a child in the state Quran-memorisation schools run by the Ministry of Education and in the circles of Riyadh's Quran charity. His biographies name Sheikh Bakri al-Tarabishi of Damascus, Sheikh Muhammad Ayyub and Sheikh Mahmoud Sukkar among the master reciters who shaped his recitation. He holds a bachelor's degree in Islamic studies and went on to a master's programme in Quranic studies.

Imam in Riyadh

He first led prayers as an imam at fourteen and went on to serve about ten Riyadh mosques, in districts such as Shubra, Sultanah, al-Duraihimiyah and al-Mansurah. In 1424 AH (2003–04) he became imam of the al-Qadi Mosque in al-Ta'awun, where he stayed for about ten years. In 2013 he was appointed the first imam of the newly opened Princess Latifa bint Sultan Mosque in al-Rahmaniyah, which holds about 7,000 worshippers, and he has also led prayers at the King Abdullah Mosque in the same district. In 2019 he moved to the new Abdullah ibn Nasser al-Muhaini Mosque in al-Arid, north Riyadh; in its first Ramadan, more than 15,000 people prayed behind him on the 27th night.

The religious affairs ministries of Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan have invited him to lead Ramadan Tarawih prayers and give talks.

Other work and writings

For more than eleven years he taught and supervised Quran-memorisation circles; he also headed resource development at one of the centres of the Riyadh Charitable Society for Quran Memorisation and examined its students. With Yasser Al-Dossari he founded the Ayat group, which produces Quranic media, and he chairs its board. He is a member of the Saudi Scientific Society for the Quran and its Sciences.

His books on reflecting on the Quran (tadabbur) include al-Ta'at al-'Ishrun li-Tadabbur al-Quran (2017) and al-Arba'un al-Qur'aniyya; he has also edited Ibn Jama'a's treatise on similar verses, with a foreword by Sheikh Ali Al-Hudhaifi. He has released more than twenty recordings, including a complete recitation of the Quran in the Hafs reading.
