About Ali Al hodhaifi

Sheikh Ali Al hodhaifi (Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hudhaifi), born on 22 May 1947 (1 Rajab 1366 AH) in the south of the Mecca region, has been imam and preacher of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina since 1979. A graduate of Al-Azhar and a specialist in the Quranic readings, he is one of the most renowned reciters in the Muslim world, and was chosen to deliver the Day of Arafah sermon at the 2026 Hajj.

Background and education

He was born in the village of al-Qarn al-Mustaqim, in the al-Awamir country, into a devout family: his father was an imam and preacher in the Saudi army. He learned to read the Quran at his village's Quran school under Sheikh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Hudhaifi and memorised basic texts of the religious sciences. He went on to study in Baljurashi, first at the Salafiyya school and then at the Scientific Institute (1383-1388 AH), before entering the College of Sharia in Riyadh.

After graduating, he taught Quranic exegesis, creed and grammar at the Scientific Institute of Baljurashi while leading prayers at the town's main mosque. He then earned a master's degree (1395 AH) and a doctorate in fiqh and Islamic governance (siyasa shar'iyya) from Al-Azhar in Cairo.

Ijazas

He received an ijaza in the ten readings from Sheikh Ahmad Abd al-Aziz al-Zayyat, and an ijaza in the Hafs reading from Sheikh Amir al-Sayyid Uthman, with whom he had begun the seven readings before his teacher's death cut them short; he also recited a complete Quran in Hafs to Sheikh Abd al-Fattah al-Qadi. Sheikh Hammad al-Ansari granted him an ijaza in hadith.

Career

He joined the Islamic University of Medina in 1397 AH, teaching creed and fiqh in several faculties as well as the Quranic readings at the Faculty of the Holy Quran. After serving as imam and preacher of Quba Mosque, he was appointed to the Prophet's Mosque in 1399 AH (1979). From 1 Ramadan 1401 AH (1981) he served at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, then returned in 1402 AH to the Prophet's Mosque, where he has remained ever since. He also led Tarawih prayers at the Grand Mosque in Mecca in several Ramadans between 1405 and 1411 AH.

He chairs the scientific committee that reviews the Medina Mushaf at the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran, sits on the Complex's higher board and has served on the committee that supervises the recorded recitations it publishes. His students include the imams Abdulmohsen Al Qasim and Abdullah Awad al-Juhani. His son, Ahmed al-Hudhaifi, is also an imam of the Prophet's Mosque.

Recitation

His recitation in the reading of Hafs, restrained and highly precise, is broadcast by many radio stations inside and outside Saudi Arabia. For the 2026 Hajj (1447 AH), royal approval named him to deliver the sermon and lead the prayer on the Day of Arafah at Namirah Mosque.
