About Abdulmohsen Al Qasim

Sheikh Abdulmohsen Al Qasim (Abd al-Muhsin ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman Al Qasim), born in Mecca in 1967 (1388 AH), has been an imam and preacher of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina since 1997. A judge with a doctorate in comparative Islamic law, he comes from a family of scholars known for compiling the fatwas of Ibn Taymiyya, and is one of the most sought-after teachers at the Prophet's Mosque for Quranic ijazas.

Family and education

A member of the Al Qasim family of the Qahtan tribe, whose home town is Al-Bir, north of Riyadh, he was born in Mecca while his father, Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim, was there overseeing the printing of Ibn Taymiyya's Majmu' al-Fatawa, the 35-volume collection he had compiled with his own father, Sheikh Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim.

He memorised the Quran at a young age and began collecting chains of transmission (isnad) at fourteen. After primary school in Riyadh and the Scientific Institute of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, he earned a BA at the College of Sharia in Riyadh, then, at the Higher Judicial Institute, a master's in comparative law on the conditions of the punishment for theft and a doctorate on a Hanafi legal commentary, al-Masbuk 'ala Minhat al-Suluk, later published in four volumes. His long-standing teachers included Sheikhs Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, Muhammad ibn Uthaymin, Salih al-Fawzan and Abdullah ibn Jibrin.

Quranic ijazas

He holds sixteen ijazas in Quran recitation, in the Hafs 'an 'Asim and Shu'ba 'an 'Asim transmissions, received from masters such as Ahmad Abd al-Aziz al-Zayyat, the Prophet's Mosque's senior reciter Ibrahim Al Akhdar, Imam Ali al-Hudhaifi and Abd al-Rafi' Radwan; his chain has only twenty-eight links back to the Prophet ﷺ. Every day between the afternoon and sunset prayers he hears students recite in the Prophet's Mosque and grants them ijazas.

Imam and judge

He joined the judiciary in 1411 AH (1990), serving at the General Court of Medina and later at the city's Court of Appeal. He was appointed imam and preacher of the Prophet's Mosque in 1418 AH (1997) and oversees the mosque's Quran and Sunnah academies, which also teach remotely. His publications include several volumes of sermons, a commentary on The Three Fundamental Principles (Taysir al-Wusul) and a series of editions of core texts for students of the religious sciences (Mutun Talib al-'Ilm).
