About Al-Shahat Muhammad Anwar

Sheikh Al-Shahat Muhammad Anwar (1950–2008) was one of the great Egyptian Quran reciters of his generation, nicknamed "the prince of melody" (amir al-nagham). Accredited by Egyptian radio in 1979, he helped found Egypt's Quran Reciters' Syndicate and served as its secretary-general until his death.

Early life and training

He was born on 1 July 1950 in Kafr al-Wazir, in the Mit Ghamr district of Dakahlia governorate. His father died about three months after his birth; his mother raised him in her father's house, and his maternal uncle, Sheikh Hilmi Mustafa, taught him the Quran, which he had memorised before the age of eight. His fine voice earned him the childhood nickname "the little sheikh".

By his early twenties he was already in demand across many governorates. His break came in the 1970s, when the head of the Mit Ghamr district invited him to recite at a ceremony attended by Kamil al-Buhi, the first director of the Quran radio station, who encouraged him to apply. Tested in 1976, he was asked to deepen his command of melodic modes first; he studied the maqamat for two years at a music institute and was accredited in 1979. His first dawn-prayer recitation went on air on 16 December 1979.

Career

His complete murattal recording of the Quran in the Hafs 'an 'Asim reading was approved by Al-Azhar's Islamic Research Academy. In 1994 he recited at the official Mawlid celebration in Alexandria attended by President Hosni Mubarak. Sent by Egypt's Ministry of Awqaf or invited privately, he led Ramadan recitation nights in Lebanon, Iran and many other countries, as far afield as Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia.

In the early 1980s he joined Sheikhs Abdelbasset Abdessamad and Mahmoud Ali al-Banna in founding the Reciters' Syndicate; a member of its first board, he became its secretary-general and held the post until his death.

Death and legacy

He died on 13 January 2008 in his home village. A father of nine, he passed the art of recitation on to two of his sons, the reciters Anwar al-Shahat Anwar and Mahmoud al-Shahat Anwar. In December 2025 Egypt's Ministry of Awqaf named the 32nd edition of its international Quran competition after him.
