About Mohamed Seddik El Menchaoui

Sheikh Mohamed Seddik El Menchaoui (Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, 1920–1969) was an Egyptian Quran reciter from Upper Egypt, born into a line of reciters. Nicknamed "the weeping voice" for the deep, contemplative emotion of his reading, he was one of the great masters of the golden age of Egyptian recitation, and his complete recitation of the Quran remains one of the most listened to in the world.

A family of reciters

He was born on 20 January 1920 in Al-Minshah, in Sohag Governorate, Upper Egypt. His father, Sheikh Siddiq al-Minshawi, was himself a well-known reciter, as was his grandfather, and his brother Mahmoud Siddiq al-Minshawi followed the same path. He grew up within this family tradition, which shaped his style profoundly.

He had memorised the Quran by the age of eight under Sheikh Muhammad al-Namaki, and then studied the rules of recitation with masters such as Sheikh Muhammad Abu al-'Ala.

Career

He began reciting independently of his father in 1952 in Sohag Governorate, and his name soon spread throughout Egypt. Egyptian radio broadcast his recitations and preserved a large archive of his recordings. He recited in many countries: in the Two Holy Mosques and at Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as in Indonesia, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya and Pakistan. In 1959 he recited at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus in the presence of President Nasser. Indonesia, Syria, Lebanon and Pakistan all decorated him.

Recordings

He left a complete murattal recitation in the Hafs transmission, recorded on eighty-two tapes and approved by a committee of scholars and reciters, as well as a complete melodic (mujawwad) recitation made for Egyptian radio. He also took part in a joint recording in the transmission of ad-Duri with Sheikhs Kamil al-Bahtimi and Fouad al-Arousi.

Illness and legacy

Stricken with oesophageal varices in 1966, he nevertheless kept reciting until his death on Friday, 20 June 1969, at the age of 49. Together with Abdelbasset Abdessamad, Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary and Mustafa Ismail, he forms the quartet of great Egyptian voices of the twentieth century, and his unadorned, fervent style continues to inspire reciters worldwide.
