About Mohamed Hassan

Sheikh Mohamed Hassan (Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Hassan), born on 8 April 1962 in Egypt's Dakahlia Governorate, is an Egyptian Salafi preacher often described as one of the most influential in the country. A former hadith lecturer in Saudi Arabia, he became known through recorded sermons and then satellite television, above all the Al-Rahma channel he founded in 2007.

Early life and education

He comes from the village of Damuh in the Dikirnis district and was raised by his maternal grandfather, who enrolled him in the village Quran school at the age of four. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Mass Communication at Cairo University.

He then pursued religious studies in Saudi Arabia under leading scholars of the kingdom, including Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin, Abdullah ibn Jibrin and Abd al-Qadir Shayba al-Hamad. He holds a doctorate from the American University in London, with a dissertation on the Prophet's ﷺ method of calling people to Islam.

Teaching and preaching

In Saudi Arabia he taught hadith and hadith methodology at the Sharia and Usul al-Din faculties of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, Qassim branch. Back in Egypt, he gave a weekly lesson for many years at the Al-Tawhid complex mosque in Mansoura, taught at preaching institutes in the city, and chairs the board of the Ahl al-Sunna complex.

His reach extended well beyond Egypt through cassette sermons and later religious satellite channels: after appearing on Al-Nas, he founded Al-Rahma in 2007 and became its main on-air figure. His programmes cover Quranic exegesis, ethics and the life of the Prophet, such as Gabriel Asks and the Prophet Answers. He has written more than fifteen books on creed, ethics and the signs of the end times, including The Reality of Tawhid.

In August 2021 he was called as a witness before a state security court in Cairo in the trial of an Islamic State cell; he testified that the group's ideology contradicts the fundamentals of Islam and that the defendants had misunderstood his sermons.

Recitation

Alongside his lectures, he recorded a complete murattal recitation of the Quran in the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.
