About Mahmoud Khalil Al Hussary

Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil Al Hussary (Mahmud Khalil al-Husari, 1917–1980) was an Egyptian Quran reciter and a leading authority on the canonical readings. The first to record a complete murattal recitation of the Quran, in 1961, and then to do so in several other transmissions, he served as head of all Quran recitation schools in Egypt. The precision of his tajwid has made his recordings a standard reference for learning the Quran.

Training

He was born on 17 September 1917 in Shubra al-Namla, a village near Tanta in the Nile Delta. His father sent him to the village Quran school at the age of four, and he had memorised the whole Quran by eight. He continued his training at the religious institute of the Ahmadi Mosque in Tanta and then at Al-Azhar, where he specialised in the ten canonical readings (al-qira'at al-'ashr).

Reciter and authority on the readings

In 1944 he sat the Egyptian radio's reciters' examination, finishing first among the candidates, and his recitations were broadcast from then on. He went on to become the official reciter of the Ahmadi Mosque in Tanta and, in 1955, of the al-Husayn Mosque in Cairo.

At the same time he rose to the highest posts in the field: inspector of Egypt's Quran recitation schools in 1957, then responsible for reviewing and correcting printed copies of the Quran at Al-Azhar, he was appointed in 1961 head of all Quran recitation schools in Egypt (shaykh 'umum al-maqari' al-misriyya). He also presided over the Union of Quran Reciters of the Islamic World. In 1967 President Nasser awarded him the Order of Sciences and Arts, First Class.

A recording pioneer

In 1961 he recorded the first complete recitation of the Quran in the Hafs transmission. This was followed by a recitation in Warsh in 1964, then in Qalun and in ad-Duri 'an Abi 'Amr in 1968, together with a melodic mujawwad version and a teaching edition (al-Mushaf al-Mu'allim) designed for learning by repetition. He recited in many countries, including at the United Nations headquarters in New York in 1977.

He also wrote a dozen books on the readings and tajwid, among them Ahkam qira'at al-Qur'an al-karim.

Death and legacy

He died on 24 November 1980, aged 63, having left a third of his estate to Quran teaching and charitable works. His exact, measured diction still makes his voice one of the most widely used for memorising the Quran across the Muslim world.
