About Hatem Fareed Alwaer

Sheikh Hatem Fareed Alwaer (Hatem Farid al-Wa'ir) is an Egyptian imam and Quran reciter. He became widely known for leading the Ramadan Tarawih prayers for nine years at the Al-Qa'id Ibrahim Mosque in Alexandria, recordings of which circulated widely. A graduate of Al-Azhar and Alexandria University, he later served as an imam in the United States.

Education

He holds a bachelor's degree in science and education from Al-Azhar University and also studied at its Faculty of Sharia. At Alexandria University he earned two postgraduate diplomas and then a master's degree in mental health.

In recitation, he received an ijaza in the reading of 'Asim through the Shatibiyya from Sheikh Ali al-Rahhal and Sheikh Usama al-Abasiri, and an ijaza in the Hafs transmission through Tayyibat al-Nashr from Sheikh Muhammad Abd al-Hamid and Sheikh Hasan Sa'id al-Sakandari. He also holds several ijazas for the hadith collections he heard from teachers, including the two Sahih works.

Imam in Egypt

From 2000 to 2016 he served as imam and preacher in Egyptian mosques, including the Bilal Mosque in Alexandria. His Tarawih prayers at Al-Qa'id Ibrahim, one of the city's best-attended mosques, were recorded every year from 1430 to 1434 AH (2009–2013). In June 2015 he did not lead the Tarawih there, as the Alexandria directorate of the Ministry of Awqaf assigned its own imams to the mosque; in May 2016 the directorate stated that he did not hold the ministry's licence to preach and lead prayers.

In the United States

From 2017 to 2022 he worked as an imam, preacher and lecturer in the United States, where he founded the Ibad al-Rahman organisation and led its mosque in Verona, as well as the Al-Huda organisation for teaching the Islamic sciences in Fort Smith.

His complete recitation of the Quran follows the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.
