About Ahmed Amer

Sheikh Ahmed Amer (Ahmed Mohamed Amer, 1927–2016) was an Egyptian Quran reciter from Sharqia province, heard on Egyptian radio from 1963. Head of his province's reciters, he carried the Egyptian art of recitation across much of the Muslim world and to Muslim communities in Europe and the Americas, and trained dozens of reciters free of charge.

Early life and training

He was born on 3 May 1927 (2 Dhu al-Qa'da 1345 AH) in the village of al-Asakira near al-Salihiyya, in the Faqous district, into a family of reciters. His father, Sheikh Muhammad Amer, sent him to the kuttab of the nearby village of al-Akhiwa, where he completed the memorisation of the Quran before the age of eleven. He then studied tajweed and the readings with Sheikh Abd al-Salam al-Sharabasi, grandfather of the former Grand Mufti of Egypt Muhammad Khatir, and by thirteen had mastered tajweed and the seven readings.

Radio and travels

In 1956 he passed the radio's reciter examination at his first attempt, before a panel chaired by Sheikh Abd al-Fattah al-Qadi, though his voice was not broadcast until 1963. He travelled to Sudan in 1958 with the first mission of the Ministry of Awqaf, alongside Sheikh Muhammad al-Ghazali, then to Palestine in 1959 and France in 1969, and later recited in Syria, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf and the Maghreb, Europe, the United States, Brazil and Asia. For many years he spent Ramadan in London reciting for the Muslim community. The King of Malaysia decorated him in the early 1970s.

Teaching and offices

Chosen as sheikh and head of the reciters' syndicate in Sharqia, he sat on the board of Egypt's general reciters' syndicate under Sheikh Abul Ainain Shu'aisha, and was a member of the recitation circle of al-Hussein mosque led by Sheikh Ahmed Issa al-Masarawi. Following his father's advice, he never accepted payment for teaching the Quran; more than thirty of his students went on to become radio reciters, among them Sheikh al-Shahat Muhammad Anwar. His complete murattal recitation follows the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.

Sheikh Ahmed Amer died on Saturday 20 February 2016 (11 Jumada al-Ula 1437 AH), aged 88; the general reciters' syndicate issued a statement mourning him.
