About Abdallah Kamel

Sheikh Abdallah Kamel (Abdullah Ahmed Kamel, 1985–2023) was an Egyptian Quran reciter and preacher from Fayoum Governorate who was blind from birth. Early life and education

He was born in 1985 in al-Mashrak al-Qibli, a village in the Yusuf al-Siddiq district of Fayoum. Blind since birth, he memorised the whole Quran as a child using Braille, and in 2005 he graduated from the Dar al-Ulum faculty of Fayoum University.

Recitation, broadcasting and imamate

Taking first place in Al-Mizmar al-Dhahabi, broadcast by the satellite channel Al-Fajr in 2015, brought him to a wide audience. He went on to appear in religious programmes on several channels, including Al-Rahma, Al-Nas and Al-Hafez, and his recitations circulated widely through his official YouTube channel. He also performed religious songs; his Hal Sallayta al-Yawm 'Alayh? ("Have you prayed for the Prophet today?") became very popular in Egypt.

He was regularly invited to lead prayers abroad: in Kuwait, where the Ramadan prayers he led were broadcast on Kuwaiti television, as well as in Saudi Arabia and the United States. His complete murattal recitation of the Quran follows the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.

Death

Having travelled to the United States at the start of Ramadan 1444 AH for a preaching tour, he died on Wednesday 26 April 2023 (6 Shawwal 1444 AH) at the Al-Tawheed Islamic Center mosque in New Jersey, shortly after leading the midday (dhuhr) prayer. His sudden death was widely mourned in Egypt and across the Arab world. He was buried in New Jersey.
