About Abdullah Matrood

Sheikh Abdullah Matrood (Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Matroud), born in 1963 (1383 AH) in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia, is a Saudi imam and Quran reciter based in Riyadh, where he has led prayers since the late 1970s. He holds a doctorate in Islamic creed and is known for his moving recitation and for an unusual path: as a teenager he sang on stage before devoting himself to the Quran.

Early life

Born in Al-Kharj, he grew up in Riyadh. He was already reciting verses at school events, and from the age of fifteen he would sometimes lead the prayer in place of his father, the imam of their mosque. At intermediate and secondary school, however, the stage drew him most: he sang with a band, acted and played several sports, including gymnastics, football and volleyball.

At Riyadh Secondary School, one of his teachers, struck by his voice when he recited the Quran, urged him to devote himself to it rather than to singing and put him forward to lead prayers in a mosque. The sheikh has told this turning point himself: it led him to give up singing. He learned recitation from several teachers, including Sheikhs Muhammad Dhakir and Muhammad al-Shahri.

Imam in Riyadh

Appointed in 1399 AH (1978-79) as imam of a mosque in Riyadh's al-Oud district, he went on to serve in the Ghubaira and Manfuha districts, then at the Prince Khalid ibn Saud Mosque in al-Uraija, where his recitation began to draw large congregations, and at the Fatima al-Zahra Mosque in al-Mursalat. He has also served as imam and preacher of the Prince Bandar ibn Abdulaziz Mosque.

Studies and teaching

Alongside his mosque duties he pursued university studies up to a doctorate, which he obtained in 2003 (1424 AH) from the Faculty of Usul al-Din (Foundations of Religion) at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, in the department of creed ('aqida). His thesis deals with Sufism in the fourth century AH and the refutations written by scholars of the same period.

He has taught at Dhu al-Nurayn, a Quran-memorisation middle and secondary school in Riyadh's Ulaisha district, while also working as a preacher and as an authorised registrar of marriage contracts.

Recitation

His complete recitation of the Quran in the reading of Hafs, grave in tone and full of feeling, is among the most widely circulated by Saudi reciters of his generation.
