About Salah Al Budair

Sheikh Salah Al Budair (Salah ibn Muhammad al-Budair), born in 1390 AH (1970) in Hofuf, in the al-Ahsa region, is a Saudi Quran reciter and judge. Imam and preacher of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina since 1419 AH, he also sits as a judge on the Medina Court of Appeal, and led Tarawih prayers at the Grand Mosque in Mecca in Ramadan 2005 and 2006.

Background and education

He belongs to the Banu Tamim tribe and grew up and went to school in Hofuf. In 1406 AH, while still a secondary-school pupil, he began leading prayers alongside Sheikh Ahmad al-Salimi. His younger brother Nabil has a recitation voice very close to his own.

He went on to study Sharia at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University and then at the Higher Institute of the Judiciary in Riyadh, where he earned a master's degree in comparative jurisprudence in 1415 AH. In March 2023 (late Sha'ban 1444) he was awarded a doctorate in jurisprudence with distinction by the Department of Islamic Studies at King Faisal University in al-Ahsa, for an edition of al-Taysir li-Ma'ani al-Jami' al-Kabir, a Hanafi commentary by Ali ibn Khalil al-Dimashqi.

Judge and imam

After training at the Grand Court of Riyadh in 1413–1414 AH, he served as a judge in Muhayil in the Asir region and at the Grand Court of Dammam before moving to Medina, where he is a judge on the Court of Appeal. Before Medina he had served as an imam in Dammam and then in Riyadh.

In 1419 AH he was appointed imam and preacher of the Prophet's Mosque. In Ramadan 1426 and 1427 AH (2005 and 2006) he also helped lead the Tarawih prayers at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He gives sermons, lectures and courses in Saudi Arabia and abroad; in 2025, for example, he led the Friday prayer in the Maldives as part of a programme run by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

Recitation and writings

His recitation in the Hafs 'an 'Asim reading is widely broadcast on radio, television and online, and his Tarawih prayers in Mecca were recorded. He is the author of a book on the oneness of God, Bulugh al-Sa'ada min Adillat Tawhid al-'Ibada, which gathers some 1,186 hadiths, as well as al-Bayan al-Basiq fi Wujub Ta'zim al-Khaliq and a commentary on the Lamiyyat al-Af'al, a didactic poem on Arabic morphology.
