About Saad El Ghamidi

Sheikh Saad El Ghamidi (Saad ibn Said ibn Saad al-Ghamdi) is a Saudi imam and Quran reciter, born in 1967 (1387 AH) in Dammam, in the kingdom's Eastern Province. A former nasheed singer who became one of the most listened-to Quran reciters in the world, he serves as imam and preacher of a mosque in Dammam and led the Tarawih prayers at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina in 1430 AH (2009).

Early life and education

He went through his entire schooling in Dammam. As a secondary-school student, from 1405 AH (1985), he first made a name for himself as a munshid, recording cassettes of religious songs; pieces such as "Ghuraba" ("Strangers") and "Malakna hadhihi al-dunya qurunan" became widely known. When he started university in 1407 AH, he gave up nasheed to concentrate on memorising the Quran.

He graduated in 1410 AH (1990) in usul al-din (foundations of the faith) from the College of Sharia in Al-Ahsa, part of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University. He completed his memorisation of the Quran during those years and in 1417 AH received an ijaza with a chain of transmission (isnad) in the Hafs reading. His recitation style owes much to Sheikh Marwan ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Qadri, an imam in Dammam.

Imamate and career

His career as a reciter began when he led the Tarawih prayers in 1411 AH (1991); his first release contained Surahs Al-Ahzab and Az-Zumar. Alongside this he worked in education, first as a teacher and then as a supervisor of Islamic education in the Eastern Province, and he also headed the Muhammad al-Fatih private schools in Dammam.

He is imam and preacher of the Yousef ibn Ahmed Kanoo Mosque in Dammam. In 1430 AH (2009) a royal order appointed him to lead the Ramadan Tarawih prayers at the Prophet's Mosque alongside its regular imams.

Recitation

His complete murattal recitation of the Quran, released in 1417 AH, has circulated enormously across the Muslim world; it is marked by an unhurried pace and crisp articulation. He has also recorded a teaching edition of the Quran (al-Mushaf al-Mu'allim), designed for learning by repetition.
