About Mustafa Raad Al Azzawi

Mustafa Raad Al Azzawi (Mustafa ibn Raad ibn Mahmoud al-Azzawi, 1986–2007) was a young Iraqi Quran reciter and muezzin from Baghdad. He held an ijaza in the Hafs and Shu'ba readings and was known for his mujawwad recitations, broadcast among others by Baghdad TV, before he was killed at the age of 21, in May 2007, in the Adhamiyah district.

Born in Baghdad on 19 April 1986 (9 Sha'ban 1406 AH) to a family living in Adhamiyah, he started attending the memorisation classes of al-Isra' Mosque with his father at the age of six, and at twelve became its youngest muezzin and reciter. After al-Qadiriyya secondary school he enrolled at the Imam al-A'zam University College, where he studied tajweed and the seven readings under Sheikh Ali Hasan Dawud, who granted him an ijaza in the Hafs and Shu'ba 'an 'Asim readings.

He recited in several Baghdad mosques, including the Imam al-A'zam (Abu Hanifa) and al-Assafi mosques, took part in recitation competitions and joined the Association of Iraqi Reciters. At eighteen he recorded twenty-six mujawwad recitations, as well as eight calls to prayer. He died in May 2007 in Adhamiyah, hit by gunfire during armed clashes in the district.
