Surah Al-Jumua – Khalid Al Jalil

Al-Jumua (Friday) is the 62nd surah of the Quran. It is a Medinan surah of 11 verses and the 110th in the traditional order of revelation, after As-Saff. It takes its name from verse 9, which commands the believers to hasten to the remembrance of God when the call to prayer is made on Friday, and it is one of the surahs the Prophet recited in the Friday prayer.

Themes

• God sent among the unlettered a messenger from among themselves, to recite His verses, purify them and teach them the Book and wisdom (62:2), "and others of them who have not yet joined them" (62:3). When asked who these others were, the Prophet ﷺ placed his hand on Salman the Persian and said: "If faith were at the Pleiades, men from among these would reach it" (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
• Those entrusted with the Torah who did not carry it out, likened to a donkey carrying books (62:5–8).
• The Friday prayer: at the call, hasten to the remembrance of God and leave trade; once the prayer is over, disperse through the land and seek God's bounty (62:9–10).
• The reproach of verse 11: when they saw trade or amusement, they rushed to it and left the Prophet standing. Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that a caravan arrived from Syria while the Prophet was delivering the Friday sermon, and all but twelve men went out to it (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

In the Friday prayer

Abu Hurayra and Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet recited Al-Jumua and Al-Munafiqoon in the Friday prayer (Muslim).

Related surahs

It follows As-Saff and belongs to the surahs opening with the glorification of God, like Al-Hadid. Verse 2 echoes Abraham's prayer in Al-Baqara (2:129).
