About Abdullah Al Khayat
Sheikh Abdullah Al Khayat (Abdullah ibn Abd al-Ghani Khayyat, 1908–1995), born and died in Mecca, served for some thirty years as imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque, until 1984, and sat on Saudi Arabia's Council of Senior Scholars from its foundation. Background and education
He was born in Mecca on 29 Shawwal 1326 AH (November 1908) into a family of the Bali tribe. His father was well versed in religious learning, particularly Hanafi law, Quranic exegesis and hadith. After the al-Khayyat primary school and the secondary curriculum of al-Raqiya school, under the Hashemite Kingdom of Hejaz, he memorised the Quran at the al-Fakhriyya school and studied with the scholars of the Grand Mosque. He graduated from the Saudi Scientific Institute in Mecca in 1350 AH (1931).
Education and public office
A member of the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice from 1347 AH, then a teacher and head of al-Faysaliyya school in Mecca, he was chosen by King Abdulaziz to teach his sons and ran the Princes' School in Riyadh from 1356 AH (1937) until the king's death in 1373 AH (1953). Back in the Hejaz, he became education adviser in Mecca, directed the city's College of Sharia and oversaw its school administration. Nominated in 1380 AH to head the Islamic University of Madinah, he declined. He joined the Council of Senior Scholars when it was created in 1391 AH (1971), later the Islamic Fiqh Academy of the Muslim World League, and chaired the board of Dar al-Hadith in Mecca.
Imam of the Grand Mosque
As early as 1346 AH he assisted Sheikh Abd al-Zahir Abu al-Samh in leading Tarawih at the Grand Mosque. A royal order later made him a full imam and preacher there in the mid-1950s (1373 AH in most biographies, 1376 AH in others), a post he held until 1404 AH (1984), when he asked King Fahd to relieve him on health grounds. Known for his moving voice, he long refused the stipend attached to the position. He was the first to record the complete Quran for Saudi radio, turning down the 70,000 riyals the state offered him. His complete recitation follows the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim.
Works and legacy
A prolific author, he published a three-volume Quran commentary (al-Tafsir al-Muyassar), six volumes of his Grand Mosque sermons, Dalil al-Muslim fi al-I'tiqad and Tuhfat al-Musafir, a guide to prayer and fasting during air travel. He died in Mecca on Sunday 7 Sha'ban 1415 AH (8 January 1995). His son, Sheikh Usama Khayyat, who had memorised the Quran under him, later became an imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque in his turn.
