About Abdul Wadud Haneef

Sheikh Abdul Wadud Haneef (Abd al-Wadud ibn Maqbul Ahmad Hanif), born in Mecca in 1963 (1382 AH), is a Saudi Quran reciter and an academic specialising in the Quran and Sunnah. An associate professor at Umm Al-Qura University, he led the night prayers at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina during Ramadan 1414 AH (1994), and his complete murattal recitation of the Quran is widely heard.

Education

He went to school in Mecca and had memorised the whole Quran by the end of primary school. He then graduated as a teacher of the Quran and its sciences from the Dar al-Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam institute at the Grand Mosque. He holds ijazas in tajweed and in the reading of 'Asim, through both the Hafs and Shu'ba transmissions, from three teachers: Sheikh Sa'id al-Abdullah al-Muhammad, Sheikh Muhammad Nabhan Husayn Misri and Sheikh Hilmi Abd al-Ra'uf Abd al-Qawi.

At Umm Al-Qura University he graduated in 1404 AH from the Department of the Quran and Sunnah in the College of Da'wah, and was immediately taken on as a teaching assistant. His master's thesis (1410 AH, with distinction) studied the divine names that close Quranic verses and how each suits the verse it ends, from Surat al-Nur to the end of the Quran. For his doctorate (1415 AH, with distinction) he produced a critical edition of part of al-Bayhaqi's hadith collection Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar.

Teaching and imamate

He became an assistant professor in the Department of the Quran and Sunnah of the College of Da'wah and Usul al-Din, was promoted to associate professor in 1430 AH, and headed the department of Quranic readings for two consecutive terms (1417–1421 AH). He has chaired the judging panels of several recitation competitions, including one between Saudi universities hosted by Umm Al-Qura. A member of the Saudi Scientific Society for the Quran and its Sciences, he has presented papers at the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran, on the revelation of the Quran and the care it received in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, and on translations of the meanings of the Quran.

In Mecca he served for ten years as imam of the Ibrahim Bakhsh Mosque (1406–1416 AH), then, from 1416 AH, as imam of the Princess Shahida Mosque in the al-Aziziyah district. In Ramadan 1414 AH he was chosen to lead the tahajjud and qiyam prayers at the Prophet's Mosque.

Recitation

As a young reciter he took first place in 1404 AH in an international Quran competition held in Saudi Arabia, and in the same year took part in Malaysia's international competition. He recorded a complete murattal of the Quran in the Hafs reading, which is how most listeners know him today.
