Surah At-Taghabun – Yousef Bin Noah Ahmad

At-Taghabun (Mutual Disillusion) is the 64th surah of the Quran. It is a Medinan surah of 18 verses and the 108th in the traditional order of revelation, after At-Tahrim. Its name comes from verse 9, which calls the Day of Judgment "the Day of mutual loss", when the gains and losses of this world are revealed for what they really are.

Themes

• All creation glorifies God; He created humankind, some of whom disbelieve and some believe, and shaped them in the finest form, knowing what hearts conceal (64:1–4).
• The fate of earlier peoples who rejected their messengers, saying "Shall mere humans guide us?" (64:5–6).
• The resurrection: the Prophet ﷺ is commanded to answer the deniers, "Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be raised" (64:7), one of three verses in which he is told to swear by his Lord on this matter, with 10:53 and 34:3.
• No misfortune strikes except by God's leave, and whoever believes in God, He guides his heart (64:11).
• Among spouses and children there may be enemies to one's faith, yet pardon and forgiveness are encouraged (64:14); "your wealth and your children are only a trial" (64:15). Buraydah reported that the Prophet came down from the pulpit to pick up al-Hasan and al-Husayn, who were stumbling towards him, and recited this verse, saying that God had spoken the truth (Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, graded authentic).
• "So fear God as much as you are able", listen, obey and spend; whoever is saved from his own greed will prosper (64:16), and a goodly loan to God is multiplied (64:17).

Related surahs

Most scholars count it Medinan, though some considered it Meccan except for its final verses. It is the last of the five surahs that open by declaring that all creation glorifies God, a series begun by Al-Hadid, and it follows Al-Munafiqoon.
