About Tawfeeq As Sayegh

Sheikh Tawfeeq As Sayegh (Tawfiq ibn Sa'id ibn Ibrahim al-Sayegh), born in 1974 in Asmara, Eritrea, is a Quran reciter and preacher who grew up and built his career in Jeddah. A student of Sheikh Ibn Uthaymin, he served for over twenty years as imam and preacher of the al-Lami Mosque, where his prayers drew large congregations, especially among young people.

Education

Brought to Saudi Arabia at an early age, he went to primary and intermediate school in Jeddah and then to the city's Scientific Institute, part of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, graduating with distinction and an "ideal student" award. He earned his bachelor's degree at the university's Qassim branch with first-class honours, followed by a master's degree from Umm al-Qura University in Mecca, awarded with distinction and a recommendation for publication.

He studied under Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin and academics such as Muhammad Sidqi al-Burnu, as well as senior students of Ibn Uthaymin: Khalid al-Mushayqih in jurisprudence, Abd al-Rahman al-Dahsh in grammar and Khalid al-Muslih in creed. He read the Quran with Sheikh Muhammad Habib al-Rahman of Pakistan and Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Shatta of Egypt, and in part with Sheikh Yahya Abd al-Razzaq al-Ghawthani of Syria.

Imam and preacher in Jeddah

After serving as assistant imam and then tarawih imam in several Jeddah mosques in the early 1990s, he was imam and preacher of the al-Lami Mosque from 1413 to 1434 AH (1992–2013). He also taught at the private al-Amjad and al-Furqan schools, supervised the Dar al-Hudat publishing house, headed the Eritrean section of the Jeddah office for preaching to expatriate communities, and chaired the committee of the Sheikh Falih Al Thani Quran Award in Doha.

He has lectured in many countries, including the United States, Germany, Sweden, France, the United Kingdom and South Africa, and has appeared on the Al-Majd, Iqraa and Al-Fajr channels.

In Dhu al-Qa'da 1435 AH (September 2014), after 33 years in the kingdom, he left Saudi Arabia following a removal decision by the authorities, whose reasons were not made public.

Recitation

He has recorded a complete recitation of the Quran in the reading of Hafs 'an 'Asim, including a new version in 1435 AH, as well as many sermons.
