About Muftah Alsaltany

Muftah Alsaltany (Muftah ibn Muhammad ibn Yunus al-Saltani), born in Benghazi on 21 May 1973 (19 Rabi' al-Thani 1393 AH), is a Libyan Quran reciter and a physician specialising in internal medicine and kidney disease. He holds ijazas in the ten readings and has recorded the Quran in many different transmissions, work for which he was honoured in Libya in 2023.

Training

He memorised the Quran in his home city of Benghazi, then received ijazas in the ten readings, through both their "minor" and "major" routes, and in the spelling and vowelling of the mushaf, from masters in Egypt, the Levant and Mauritania. These include an ijaza in the ten readings from al-Azhar, where he ranked second in the advanced qira'at programme, and an ijaza in the reading of Qalun and in Uthmanic orthography from Libya's General Administration of Quranic Affairs. Alongside this he has pursued a medical career as a consultant in internal medicine and nephrology, after studying at Garyounis University (now the University of Benghazi).

Recordings

He has recorded complete recitations in a range of transmissions, among them Hafs 'an 'Asim, Shu'ba 'an 'Asim, al-Duri 'an Abi 'Amr, Ibn Dhakwan 'an Ibn 'Amir and al-Duri 'an al-Kisa'i, as well as those of Warsh, al-Bazzi, Qunbul, al-Susi, Hisham, Khalaf, Abu al-Harith, Rawh and Ruways.

On 17 April 2023, the night of 27 Ramadan 1444, he was honoured at the official Laylat al-Qadr ceremony held in Tripoli in the presence of the prime minister, being presented as the first reciter in the Muslim world to have recorded the ten readings through both their minor and major routes.
