About Mohamed El Kantaoui

Sheikh Mohamed El Kantaoui is a Moroccan Quran reciter from the Tafilalet region, based in Rabat, whose voice many Moroccans associate with the Quran recitations broadcast on national radio and television during Ramadan. The Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs recorded a complete murattal Quran with him in the Warsh transmission, the reading followed in Morocco.

Recordings

He is one of the readers of the "Quranic March" (al-Masira al-Qur'aniyya), the complete recitation of the Quran that the Ministry of Habous has Moroccan reciters record under the supervision of a scholarly committee, and which Moroccan radio and television broadcast every Ramadan at a rate of two hizbs a day. His participation from 1985 onwards did much to make his name.

The ministry also chose him for one of the murattal Qurans it produces in the reading of Warsh 'an Nafi' by the route of al-Azraq, a series intended to promote Moroccan voices and preserve the country's traditional reading. Excerpts of his recitation are also used in the ministry's Quran teaching programmes.

Training and teaching

He received an ijaza to recite and teach the Quran in 1996, and is among the Moroccan reciters to whom the Iraqi master of the Quranic readings Safa' al-Din al-A'zami (1947–2011), who spent his last years in Morocco, granted an ijaza in the Warsh reading.

A member of the jury of the Hassan II Prize for Quran memorisation and recitation, now the Mohammed VI Prize, he has trained several reciters who in turn recorded the Quranic March, among them Mohamed Hamdan and Abdessalam al-Asri.
