Surah Al-Ghashiya – Mishary Rashid Alafasy

Al-Ghashiya ("The Overwhelming") is the 88th surah of the Quran, in Juz' Amma. Meccan, it has 26 verses and is the 68th surah in the traditional order of revelation, after Adh-Dhariyat. Its name, one of the names of the Day of Resurrection, comes from its opening question: "Has the story of the Overwhelming Event reached you?" (88:1).

The surah contrasts two groups of faces on that day: humbled, weary faces exposed to a scorching fire, given boiling water and thorny food that neither nourishes nor satisfies hunger (88:2-7), and radiant faces, content with their striving, in a lofty garden with flowing springs, raised couches and spread carpets (88:8-16).

It then points to familiar signs: "Do they not look at the camels, how they were created?", at the sky raised high, the mountains set firm and the earth spread out (88:17-20). The Prophet ﷺ is only a reminder, not a controller over people: to God is their return, and upon Him their reckoning (88:21-26).

The Prophet ﷺ recited it with Al-Ala at the two Eids and on Fridays, and after Al-Jumu'a at Friday prayer (Muslim).
