Surah Al-Zalzala – Mahmoud Khalil Al Hussary

Al-Zalzala (Az-Zalzala, "The Earthquake") is the 99th surah of the Quran, in Juz' Amma. Medinan in the standard classification, though some early authorities held it to be Meccan, it has 8 verses and is the 93rd surah in the traditional order of revelation, after An-Nisa. It opens with the earth shaken with its final quake (99:1).

On that day the earth throws out its burdens, man asks what is happening to it, and it reports its news, for its Lord has inspired it (99:2-5); commentators explain that it will bear witness to what was done upon it. People then come forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds (99:6).

The surah ends with two verses of immense scope: "Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it" (99:7-8). Asked about donkeys, after speaking of the reward and burden of keeping horses, the Prophet ﷺ said nothing had been revealed to him about them except this "unique, all-embracing verse" (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
