About Alzain Mohamed Ahmed

Sheikh Alzain Mohamed Ahmed (al-Zain Muhammad Ahmad al-Zain), born in 1982 in North Kordofan, is a Sudanese Quran reciter who has been imam of the Sayyida Sanhouri Mosque in Khartoum's al-Manshiya district since 2001. His recitation, rooted in Sudan's own melodic modes, draws thousands of worshippers every Ramadan and has made him one of the most popular voices in the country.

Background and training

He was born in the village of al-Baniyya, in the Umm Dam Hajj Ahmed locality of North Kordofan State. Encouraged by his parents and by cousins who had gone before him, he entered the khalwa (traditional Quran school) of Kharsi Wad Dulayb in the Bara locality at around the age of ten, and memorised the whole Quran there in two and a half years, mainly under Sheikhs Hussein Hamid and Ahmad Babikir. He then continued his studies at the institute attached to the khalwa.

He received an ijaza in recitation from the Holy Quran and Islamic Sciences University in Omdurman, and later another at Al-Azhar from Sheikh Ahmad Issa al-Masarawi.

Imam in Khartoum

He first came to Khartoum in 1998, still a student, to lead Tarawih and Tahajjud prayers during the Ramadan holidays; his first mosque in the capital was Khatim al-Anbiya Mosque in the al-Hattana district of Omdurman. In 2001 he was chosen from among several candidates to lead the Sayyida Sanhouri Mosque in al-Manshiya. During Ramadan, worshippers from all three cities of the capital, Khartoum, Khartoum North and Omdurman, crowd into the mosque for his night prayers.

Besides leading prayers, he works in farming and trade, and he founded a khalwa that had some 560 pupils in 2018.

Recitation

He recites in the reading of Hafs, in a style that draws on Sudan's melodic tradition. His voice is regularly broadcast on Sudan's Holy Quran Radio, and he has recorded two complete recitations of the Quran, one in the studio and the other during Tarawih prayers.
