Surah As-Saff – Ahmed Aissa El Masarawi

As-Saff (The Ranks) is the 61st surah of the Quran. It is a Medinan surah of 14 verses and the 109th in the traditional order of revelation, after At-Taghabun. It takes its name from verse 4, "God loves those who fight in His cause in ranks, as though they were a solid structure", and calls the believers to match their words with deeds and to become "helpers of God".

Context of revelation

Abdullah ibn Salam reported that a group of Companions were discussing which deed God loves most, saying they would do it if they knew; God then revealed this surah, and the Prophet ﷺ recited it to them in full (al-Tirmidhi, graded sahih). The hadith is famous because each narrator in its chain recited the surah to the next.

Themes

• The reproach "Why do you say what you do not do? Most hateful it is to God that you say what you do not do" (61:2–3), and the praise of those who stand firm in ranks (61:4).
• Moses asking his people why they hurt him when they knew he was God's messenger (61:5).
• Jesus son of Mary, confirming the Torah and announcing "a messenger to come after me whose name is Ahmad" (61:6). In a hadith of al-Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet said: "I have several names: I am Muhammad, and I am Ahmad…"
• Those who want to put out God's light with their mouths, while God will perfect His light (61:8), and the religion of truth that will prevail (61:9).
• "Shall I guide you to a trade that will save you from a painful punishment?" — faith and striving with wealth and life, rewarded with forgiveness, gardens, and help from God with a near victory (61:10–13).
• The closing call: be helpers of God, as the disciples answered Jesus, "We are God's helpers" (61:14).

It belongs to the surahs opening with the glorification of God, like Al-Hadid, and is followed by Al-Jumua. The disciples' answer also appears in Aal-e-Imran (3:52).
