Surah Al-Qaria – Abdul Rashid Ali Sufi

Al-Qaria (Al-Qari'a, "The Calamity", literally "the Striking Blow") is the 101st surah of the Quran, in Juz' Amma. Meccan, it has 11 verses and is the 30th surah in the traditional order of revelation, after Quraish. Al-Qari'a is one of the names of the Day of Resurrection, which will strike hearts with terror.

The surah opens by repeating this name as a question, to stress how far the event exceeds human imagination: "The Striking Calamity! What is the Striking Calamity?" (101:1-3). On that day people will be like scattered moths, and the mountains like tufts of carded wool (101:4-5).

Then comes the weighing of deeds: the one whose scales are heavy will be in a pleasing life, while the one whose scales are light will have the abyss, al-Hawiya, as his refuge (literally his "mother"): "a blazing fire" (101:6-11).

Like Al-Haqqa and Al-Ghashiya, it bears one of the names of the Last Day.
