About Abdullah Awad Al Juhani

Sheikh Abdullah Awad Al Juhani (Abdullah ibn Awad ibn Fahd al-Dhubyani al-Juhani), born on 13 January 1976 (11 Muharram 1396 AH) in Medina, has been an imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca since 2007. He holds a doctorate in Quranic exegesis and has led prayers in four of Islam's most revered mosques: Al-Qiblatayn, the Prophet's Mosque, Quba and the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

Background and education

He memorised the Quran as a child in the memorisation circle of Al-Ashraf Mosque in Medina's al-Harra al-Gharbiyya district. After Al-Izz ibn Abd al-Salam primary school, he completed his secondary studies at the institute of the Islamic University of Medina and then earned his bachelor's degree at the university's Faculty of the Holy Quran.

He recited to several masters, including Sheikhs Muhammad Faruq al-Ra'i, Abd al-Rahim ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz and Muhammad Tamim al-Zu'bi. Sheikh Ahmad Abd al-Aziz al-Zayyat and Sheikh Ibrahim al-Akhdar, head of the reciters at the Prophet's Mosque, granted him their ijazas, and he was also a student of Sheikh Ali al-Hudhaifi.

After teaching at a Quran-memorisation primary school and then at the Teachers' College in Medina (1421-1427 AH), he joined Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca, at the College of Da'wah and Foundations of Religion. There he completed a master's degree (1430 AH, 2009), a critical edition of a manuscript of al-Tha'labi's Quran commentary, and a doctorate (1433 AH, 2012) on the rare words of the Quran in al-Tabari's exegesis, graded excellent.

Imamate

Imam of Al-Qiblatayn Mosque, he took part in the Tarawih and Tahajjud prayers at the Prophet's Mosque in Ramadan 1419 and 1420 AH, and then led prayers at Quba Mosque from 1421 to 1424 AH; his recordings from those years, especially the Ramadan night prayers of 1422 AH, circulated widely. In 1426 AH (2005) he was assigned to lead Tarawih at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, and in Jumada al-Akhirah 1428 AH (July 2007) he was appointed one of its official imams.

He has also travelled abroad as a guest imam; in April 2019, during a visit to Pakistan, he led prayers at the Parliament in Islamabad.

Recitation

He recites mainly in the reading of Hafs, in a full, controlled voice. At the King Fahd Complex in Medina he has also recorded a complete recitation of the Quran in the reading of al-Duri 'an Abi 'Amr.
