About Mohamed Tablawi

Sheikh Mohamed Tablawi (Muhammad Mahmoud al-Tablawi), born on 14 November 1934 in Mit Uqba, near Cairo, and died on 5 May 2020 (12 Ramadan 1441 AH), was one of the great Egyptian Quran reciters of the twentieth century. A reciter for Egyptian Radio and al-Azhar Mosque, nicknamed "the reciter of kings and presidents", he headed Egypt's Syndicate of Quran Reciters and Memorisers until his death.

Early life

He was born in the village of Mit Uqba, in Giza Governorate, to a family with roots in the Sharqia and Menoufia governorates. An only child, he was sent to the village kuttab (Quran school) at the age of four and had memorised the whole Quran, with its tajweed rules, by about nine.

From the age of twelve he recited at evening gatherings and funerals for ten piastres a night; by fifteen he was being invited by prominent families and reciting alongside well-known radio reciters. For a time he was also muezzin and reciter at the mosque of the Matossian tobacco factory in Giza.

Radio and al-Azhar

He failed the Egyptian Radio reciters' examination nine times, partly for lack of training in the melodic modes (maqamat), and was finally accepted on his tenth attempt, in 1970. His voice soon became one of the most familiar on the Quran radio station, and in the 1970s he was chosen as reciter of al-Azhar Mosque.

He recorded two complete recitations of the Quran for the radio in the reading of Hafs: a melodic mujawwad version of about 75 hours and a plainer murattal version of about 33 hours.

International standing

Invited abroad or sent by the Ministry of Awqaf and al-Azhar, he travelled to more than 80 countries, represented Egypt at conferences and judged many international recitation competitions. In 1973 he recited for seven days at Raghadan Palace in Amman during the mourning for Queen Zein al-Sharaf, mother of King Hussein. In the 1970s King Khalid of Saudi Arabia invited him to recite inside the Kaaba during the ceremony of its washing.

A member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and an adviser to the Ministry of Awqaf, he became head (naqib) of the Syndicate of Quran Reciters and Memorisers, a post he held until his death. He was decorated in Lebanon during a Laylat al-Qadr celebration and received the King Abdullah I bin al-Hussein International Award in 2016.

Death

He died on 5 May 2020, during Ramadan, after a long illness. Al-Azhar, the Ministry of Awqaf and Dar al-Ifta mourned him, and he was buried in the family tomb at al-Basatin in Cairo, in a funeral limited in size because of the Covid-19 pandemic. He is often described as the last great name of the generation of Mustafa Ismail, Abdul Basit Abdul Samad and Mahmoud Ali al-Banna.
