About Ahmed Nuinaa

Sheikh Ahmed Nuinaa (Ahmad Ahmad Nu'ayna'), born on 15 March 1954 in Metoubes, Kafr El Sheikh Governorate, is an Egyptian Quran reciter and physician known as "the doctor reciter". A self-declared heir to the style of Mustafa Ismail, an official reciter of Egyptian radio since 1979 and long known as "the reciter of the presidency", he was appointed Egypt's Chief Reciter (Shaykh 'Umum al-Maqari') in October 2025.

Background and education

He started at the village kuttab at four and knew the whole Quran by heart at eight, learning tajweed from Sheikh Ahmad al-Shawwa. After primary and preparatory school in Metoubes and secondary school in Rosetta (Beheira Governorate), he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Alexandria University. As a student he read the ten readings with Sheikh Muhammad Farid al-Nu'mani and his wife, Sheikha Umm al-Sa'd, visiting them every day after the dawn prayer before heading to university. After graduating he worked at Alexandria University Hospital.

As a boy he was struck by the voice of his town's reciter, Sheikh Amin al-Hilali, and then by the great names he heard on the radio: Mustafa Ismail, Muhammad Rifat, Abdul Basit Abdul Samad, Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary and Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi. Mustafa Ismail, whom he came to know personally, remained his chief model.

Career

Noticed by Ahmad al-Sayyid Darwish, president of the Young Muslims Association, he recited before figures such as Sheikh al-Ghazali, Sheikh Hasan Ma'mun and Sheikh Ahmad Hasan al-Baquri, and for ten years served as reciter of the al-Sammak mosque in Alexandria. In 1979 he passed the Egyptian radio and television reciters' examination, ranking first.

During his military service as a naval doctor he recited several times before President Anwar Sadat, notably at the first Doctors' Day on 18 March 1979. Sadat then made him one of his personal physicians within his private secretariat and asked him to recite at the official ceremonies and Friday prayers he attended. He went on reciting at state ceremonies under Hosni Mubarak.

Invited across the Arab and Muslim world, Europe and North America, especially for Ramadan nights, he won first place at the international Quran recitation competition in New Delhi in 1985; by his own account he also took first place at competitions held in Malaysia (1995) and Brunei.

Chief Reciter of Egypt

In October 2025 the Minister of Religious Endowments, Osama al-Azhari, appointed him Chief Reciter of Egypt, the country's highest official post for Quran recitation, with Sheikhs Abdel Fattah al-Taruti and Mahmoud al-Khesht as his deputies.
